Not so much a timing issue

ok so am using the analogue outs 1 and 2 in Logic 8 and can get my midi data fine so its all in time,by shifting the notes back into place..but when it comes to recording it to an audio track there is obvious latency/delay...i am sure this is an easy fix...i find i'm not overly familiar with Logics audio Quantize tool and my efforts aren't paying off...am i missing something...buffer size is 256...do i use the recording delay?

Are you using the VC plugin? MIDI over the Virus' USB? Soundcrad MIDI out? Is the audio too late or too early? And by how much (e.g. compare with a soft synth bounce of same MIDI data)?

unfortunately midi via usb

yes am using midi via usb instead of cables,so i can use Vc...and the timing is slightly early...actually since then my whole Virus seems to have completely fallen to pieces...it works flawlessly in Live 8 even recording through the analogue outs using midi via usb..i really use Logic for its plugs...you can't win with these Viruses...its true it really is a love hate relationship..but i'd miss it if it went...sort of!

in fact

the Access Virus all be it a great synth..which it is!..is probably the most unreliable piece of kit i have ever owned,to the point that if i am doing anything commercially...i just won't use it..its that unreliable...£1800 is a joke to be honest...if it all worked all of the time, this price would be acceptable but the fact remains it doesn't....capturing its audio is like running across hot coals...as quickly as possible so you come out ok on the other side'...if this product didn't sound so good...it would be history.

Well - that explains it! Since you are using VC, Logic assumes that you are also using the USB outs and compensates for the delay by sending MIDI data early. That's why it comes out early through the analog outs. There are several ways to solve this:

  • Don't use VC, or use it just for sound design and then burn the patches using VCC, and play them using your soundcard MIDI port while it is connected to the Virus, or using the "Virus MIDI synth" port with the USB connected (but VC plugin not loaded). The downside of this is that you don't have plugin automation, but almost everything can be acheived using MIDI CC-s.
  • Use VC + audio outs, but enable VC's "live" mode. Plugin latency will be roughly 8 times shorter, so that the head start that the Virus notes get is unnoticeable. The downsode is that I have noticed a little back and forth drift in the rhythm while in live mode, so you should test before you use it.
  • Streamline your PC and solve whatever problem that is causing the Virus to "break down". Here's a post that sums it up nicely.

Thanks Flabberbob

yeah the problem is i am still fairly new to Logic...as i don't have this problem in Live 8,i just like the way logic sounds and i love the plugs but am not as savy as of yet with Logic...the answer is prob to create in live then export the audio to Logic..i'm sure its a placebo but Logic sounds better to my ears..i can't really be programming separately and then burn,it just isn't my style of workflow..i have to be listening and playing at the same time and tweaking..VC is top notch for this....i just would happily cough up couple of 100 quids for a standalone editor so i could have the midi cables, analogue outs and VC all in sync..this would be fantastic..Thanks again mate, appreciate it.

It could be the result of some unexpected interaction with some other software running at the same time. Or maybe each project has different demands on the system.

the culprit

i think ever since i bought electra x this has been unstable..i think i have read a few threads about Logic crashing as a result of tone 2's electra x.I think this may be the cause.(((

Heyy

I dont have Tone2 electrax but I still have this problem.... I use VC with Usb cables and USB outs... and I have Midi notes recording earling, and sometimes playing too early! :( sucks... man, if the virus worked as it should it would be deadly, but i feel like i spend more time troubleshooting than working... Also, when Im in VC mode and I edit patches on my physical virus=TROUBLE... :(
