    • Data entry etc

Im trying to wrap my mind around what data entry actually means , that goes for the controller assignments within the matrix also .. No doubt been said
I mean for example in this vid , BC uses data entry set to lfo contours as shown in the later part of this vid , but what is the data entry actually assigned to and how’s it effecting the lfo contours ?

      Cheers
    • Data Entry is MIDI Controller 6.

You can use MIDI Controller messages as input in the Mod Matrix and you can assign the Soft Knobs to send these Controller messages. But you can also use other devices or your DAW to send those MIDI Controller messages to your Virus.

Oli, I am also not familiar enough with MIDI.So, the Matrix source set to Data Entry will then be whatever you assign to a soft knob?
      Thanks for your help! :)

      Two separate things:

      Soft Knob

As well as being used for editing, the three VALUE knobs below the display function as extra performance
controls called “Soft Knobs” for instant access to parameters that might otherwise not be directly available.

      ƒƒFunction as...
Off, Analog Boost Int ... Velo>Volume: Select from a list of Soft Knob destinations.

Tip: Instead of direct control, it is fairly common to specify a continuous controller (e.g. CC06 Data) here,
then use the same CC as source in the modulation matrix. This method not only lets you control a wider
range of destinations with the Soft Knobs, but also allows multiple destinations with variable ranges - complex
morphing at the twist of a knob.

      Mod Matrix Parameters

The MOD menu contains all the parameters for the LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) and the Modulation
Matrix. You can use a wide variety of modulators to apply dynamic changes to the sound, such as vibrato or
      tremolo effects, automated sweeps etc.

The modulation matrix is used for custom control routing. Six sources can be routed to three destinations
each. Available sources include the internal envelopes and LFOs as well as most MIDI contr ollers, channel
pressure (aftertouch) etc.. The list of destinations includes almost every Single Mode parameter in the Virus.

The information below applies to any slot in the matrix.

      ƒƒSource
Off, Pitch Bend ... Random: Specifies the modulation source (envelopes, LFOs, MIDI controllers etc.). This
source can be simultaneously routed to a maximum of three destinations per slot.

      In short:

      • Soft Knobs can be configured to either send a MIDI controller message or directly control a parameter, or a ModMatrix slot assigment value (NOT the source)
      • ModMatrix source can be configured to either a MIDI controller message or an internal control value (think "CV").
So you get these possible routings:

      Soft KnobModMatrix SourceModMatrix Assignment
      Virus Parameter direct
      n/an/a
      MIDI Cntrl-->MIDI Cntrl Value
      --
      ModMatrix Assignment
      -->--Soft Knob Value

Best you try it out with the Virus Control plugin, it will help to understand the concept. It's fun and has a lot of potential for creative sound design.
