I make a patch and save it in the Ram section, then when the virus's AC power is cut all of the patches dissapear. Is this normal?
Saved patches in ram reset when the ac plug is pulled - is this normal?

sounds like the battery on the motherboard is not working.

battery swapped. all done thanks Marc. if only i had thought of that a few years back when i bought the thing!! must have been a dud battery from the start!
as I had hoped - this has solved my bigger issue of the virus getting stuck at the welcome screen.

good to know, would you mind mention this where appropriate, i think you've posted something about your virus being stuck at startup elsewhere. as for the battery: they are only guaranteed to run for a few years (3 i think), in most cases they run for more but i wouldn't always count on it.

my virus has never saved patches - i just thought it was the norm.
