Intermittent arp sync issues

  • I get arp not being in total sync randomly with the rest of song upon playing. It has been happening for quite a while now, but didn't bother to report since this can be "fixed" by stopping and playing the song again. However, I wonder if this can be fixed for good. Anyone else have similar problem?

  • Sorry about the missing info.

    Ableton Live 8.0.5b12 / APC40 / Keystation 49e
    Virus Ti Snow
    Prismsound Orpheus @ 220 samples

  • This is happening to me a lot too, its like there's a sudden slip with the arp parts and they go out of sync.

    I have 3 options,
1.use 512 buffer and medium range and get less dropouts and squeaks but terrible arp sync
2 use 512 buffer and small range and get better timimng but lots of latency
3.or use the suggested 256/small buffer levels and get better arp timing but a pile of audio noises/problems ???

There must be something to fix this, the total integration is the only reason I bought a hardware synth in years. Its just going to end up an expensive decoration at this rate :S

  • This has been going on from the very outset with Ti using VC, and tbh I don't beleive it will ever be cured completely.

The best OS was the release version before the current one (not the beta's) - I think it was 3.01.15 (IIRC?) That was the only OS that gave me arps that could withstand tweaking of parameters, or playing other parts with heavy patches, without losing sync every single time. I'm going to try the new beta later, as this 3.1 release seems as bad as any previous OS on the timing front.

There was an article on the old site (troubleshooting section) pretty much saying the problem was unavoidable with certain computer architectures, certain combinations of processor and chipset, etc. It wasnt really detailed. My take is that once again the limitations of the USB1 protocol are the chief factor - time synchronisation is apparently one of the hardest thing to maintain along the signal path, and hence one of the biggest technical challenges of the Ti concept. I doubt whether standard, non specialised components, on board USB, and non calibrated OS' are capable of guaranteeing the sort of free, robust flow of data that would benecessary for rock solid timing.

if you have a proper setup, you won't have problems. i _can_ say that because i don't have problems. if you found something we don't know or understand we can work on it to make it better. so how do i reproduce your problem?

    best, marc

  • I can say that I have never been able to use ARPs in projects for the very reason that they wander all over the place and jump, etc. (usually i could get away with setting the tempo in single mode and playing then stretching it about a little).

All i can say is what hardware/software i use - specific projects or timing dont really seem to matter...

    - Virus TI Desktop (obviously :D )
    - Creative X-Fi elite pro sound card
    - Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Express Card
    - ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE motherboard
    - AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz
    - Windows 7, though this would happen on XP SP 2 and 3
    - FL Studio 7 onwards (i think, definitely 8 onwards) - Using Creative ASIO driver on buffer sizes usually 5,10 or 20 ms @ 44100 Hz sample rate

I will point out that it is not only timing on arps, really - and on recording on FL, sometimes things like automation would happen too early (like seconds too early).

Having said that, in standalone mode (while plugged into USB, and while not too, i think) arps tend to jump around when you release keys.
EDIT - It actually seems with the preset in mind that it's the LFOs that lose their timing - its a gate on the synth originating from one of the LFOs and it drops in tempo when i release the key like it sort of peters out, im sure it's some weird interaction but im not sure what...

and why do multi mode saves not remember the tempo you saved it at (like, ever) they always pick some random tempo that has no relation to what you are using (ie not in agreement with the [xyz] 'original value' in brackets when you change it back to what you want)?...

can you give me an example for such an preset?

The only preset which shows it off clearly is a personal one - however if given an appropriate email address i can send a midi file containing it and an mp3 to show the particular behaviour to which i'm referring...
