Yes, in 1994 the filtered-distorted lead (a.k.a. screaming) was a novelty (although I remember Patrick Cowley and Harold Faltermeyer using it back in the day). What really drives the distortion insane is the resonance - in your case, it should be around the 90-100 area. Also, adding portamento (around 50 I think) will create the sweeping when jumping from the lowest to the highest note. I never thought much of the wide distortion until you showed me what could be done with it - very nice!

it's basically a square wave with narrow pulse with the filter cut off modulated and saturated hard out into reverb and delay

I designed that sound on my Virus and got a pretty good result. Make sure to modulate the cutoff with velocity. With that high resonance you can "play" the overtone spectrum. This effect is one of the things that makes this sound so special.

True (2:18 ), and although it is much harsher here (8:11), I guess that only in the 90's people were mentally prepared for such grinding dirstortions driven by such piercing resonance on the verge of self oscillation.

A 50% PWM square wave has half the harmonics (only odd) of a sawtooth, but once you change the PWM or modulate it, you add harmonics.
