Automation problems recording jam with virus ti keyboard in Ableton

  • I wonder if you guys could help me with this. What I want to be able to
do is mess around on the virus, tweak
automation, and have everything I do recorded in Ableton as either midi
or automation so I can go back and edit it later.

Now as far as I see it there are two ways to go here

    1.
Sequencer mode. Would be the best option, but ableton only records
parameters that have already been registered for automation. That's a
bit of a game killer. Is there a workaround - a template or script or
something? Or has it been fixed in Ableton 9 (I'm still on 8 )?

    2.
Single mode (& presumably if I got this to work I could get multi
to work too). This succeeds in recording all automation as midi CCs but
with the disadvantage that initial state of those CCs is not recorded.
So if you modify a parameter, when it comes to playback, you have lost
the initial value. Is there a workaround for this - without knowing in
advance which CCs you will modify - like a button to send all current CC
values at once? Or an option to do so every time a patch is loaded?

    Any help much appreciated.

  • Hi bob, thank you for the reply.

    (1) Unfortunately, manually adding controls to the automation list isn't going to work for me as I don't know in advance which I'll use. :(
    (2) do you mean all 128 patches or just one?

  • Re. (1) if your DAW supports VST3, the VST3 version of VC will expose all of the Virus's available automation destinations.
Re. (2), The edit buffer contains only the currently loaded patch, so just one patch. The word bank is used in a different context here: each patch is made out of several banks of parameters, of which you can dump bank A as CC-s (and bank B as note-aftertouch if your DAW supports it).

  • hey psydeshow,

maybe this will help, it's along and boring video that i made....and i was drunk LOL but hey ....i think that it will help you!

i've edit the automations but you can record them also.

and I got the idea to work like this, when I had seen this workflow

this video's should do the trick to work with ableton and the virus,

or looking good on youtube, you will definitely find a video that help!

    success

  • Hey guitarie

thanks for your response, but, can you tell me whether you are answering my question (1) or (2) above and if so, at which point during the 45 minute video you deal with this issue (surely it's not all about that).

    Cheers

  • shit i was again drunk hehehe....read it again wrong!!!!
but if you buy a midi controller with more knobs and link your virus to them...you can leave them on the position that they are set.
I don't know an other way.
it's an virtual analog not an analog that remains the value of the buttons on position.
I hope I have now read correctly.

  • I'm afraid you didn't, but don't worry, flabberbob is thinking along the right lines. Unfortunately from what he says it sounds like there is no simple way to do this in Ableton. :( Maybe time to get into cubase! Unless there is a VST3 M4L wrapper or something.
