MIDI editor starting point...?

All, I’m thinking about dipping my toes into writing a MIDI editor for several synths (including Virus Ti).

Any tips for starting points? I’m mainly Mac and Xcode. Resources for widgets for dials and sliders...? Useful libraries? Open source examples...?

Thanks, but not really what I'm after. I'm looking to write my own custom Mac based editor.

Thanks. Yeah - I took a look a Juce. I think the only problem I really had with it, is that its not open source / free. I guess I am going to need to use pre-built widgets for the GUI though. I might have to go that direction.
