Sorry guys, but I have to up this thread: Any general tips on mastering?

Suppose I have my mix, it's ready to go, but the sound is too muddy/quiet/not eq'ed right/dirty/etc.

I understand that there's no one "template" that fits all, but what are some *general* things to put on the Master Channel, as a good rule of thumb?

    * Need to increase volume/loudness to commercial level (WITHOUT distortion, clipping, or over-compression/strain)
    * Need to "clean up"/polish the mix, so it's not dirty; so it "sparkles" (EQ?)
    * Maybe cut all freq's below a certain threshold, say 50 Hz?

I'm not a skilled engineer, I'm a home studio enthusiast, but there's gotta be some general things that can instantly improve my mix?

No matter what track(s) I listen to, regardless of genre, they all have the same mastered sound -- nice, cozy, loud, warm, but without any strain or overcompression.

    Hi,

Part # 13 changes its volume in my track, even though it doesn't look like there's any automation there.

I drag the volume bar back where it should be, but as soon as I start playing my track, the volume bar drops back (it goes from 37 to 31).

I right-clicked on the volume bar and did "Add To Automation" and viewed its automation graph, but there is nothing there. Even if I force an automated value it ignores it the moment I start playing my track from the beginning, the bar just goes back to the left.

    Any ideas?

This isn't related to the Virus but more of a general music production issue.

Can anyone suggest a good Mastering tool/plug-in?

I'm not a mastering guru, but I know several things go into mastering a mix,

    - Multiband Compression
    - Harmonic Equalization
    - Volume maximization / brickwall limiting
    - "Polishing" to create brilliance

Not Izotope Ozone. I tried that one and didn't like it, it distorted my mix and made it sound bad (all templates).

But something like it, hopefully easy-to-use and with pro results, I'm a producer and I just need that "final touch" to make my mix sound commercial and loud.

    Thanks

    My email address is:

This is also my YouTube handle. I check this address every day. I'll send you a test email just so you have my address.

Yes, definitely, let's keep in touch! ;) I think I already emailed Erol.

I don't have MSN or ICQ, but I do have Skype - if necessary we can arrange some videoconferences, but I'll need to set up my Skype account.

These are the "industry-standard" sets for Pop/Dance/Electro/House.

    1) "7Skies". Highly recommended. Best all-around soundset available. Has all the tranceleads, saws, FX, plucks, pads, very high-quality.

    2) "CFA V-Bass". This is THE set for those rich, thick, ultra-phat, awesome Electro/House-basses! Just listen to the demo! Pretty expensive, but well worth the money. You're set with all the amazing Electro basslines here. David Guetta, LMFAO, Rihanna, Deadmau5, etc.

Also, you might want to consider:

    3) "CFA Thrillogy Vol. 1". Very nice thick EuroLeads/Trance-saws, if you're doing Trance/Hardstyle/Pop-Trance this is a must for those Euro hypersaws.

Last but not least, there's a nice *free* soundset that just came out, available to all Virus users, called DejaVu Electronics that you can download for free:

This one has some nice Dubstep wobbles, electro basses, and lots of commercial plucks and Afrojack/Dutch sounds.

As Bob said, different Virus sounds are different parts in the Virus list that you see when you open the Virus VST. The Snow should have 4 and the Keyboard/Desktop has 16. You can drag a different sound to each "part."

To work with each part, create a MIDI Out channel that maps to that part. That is shown in the Tutorial project.

All FL Studio users: before you do anything else, do this:

    1) Go to your folder
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Access Music\Virus TI\Documentation\Tutorials\Imageline FL Studio

    2) Do you see the file
Virus TI Tutorial Song.flp ? If yes, double-click it. This is the Tutorial FLP project. Open it in FL.

    3) Click Play to play the whole song. Is it playing correctly? There should be no delays, crackles, or anything else. Make sure this Tutorial is playing OK. It contains a bunch of Virus sounds/parts arranged in a song.

If everything sounds OK, you have two choices. You can either build on top of this Tutorial - delete the stuff you don't need, and add your own stuff (new samples, new Parts for the Virus TI, new VSTs, etc.) This is what I did, and what I recommend. Or, you can study their settings, and apply them to your other FLP files. You can do that as well, but it's a little more difficult.

No real way to turn up the Virus alone, it's pretty quiet on its own.

You need to turn everything else down so it's on the same level, and then boost the whole mix.

I use a program that directly captures to .WAV whatever is playing in my sound card right now, from whatever source:

    MP3 my MP3 v3.1

    http://www.mp3mymp3.com/

You need to select the right input for the signal, it's usually the "Monitor" device of your sound card. Make sure you have the right input by recording several samples and checking that they're not empty.

Then, I just hit Record and it saves it to .WAV. I stop whenever I want.

Nice soundset, I bought it 5 min. ago! Waiting for your email!

BTW, you guys need to re-do the site in English, I understand German but not everyone does.

Please send the bank as soon as you get my payment.

P.S. I liked that last "The World Belongs To You"-synth at the end of the demo ;)

Well, it's been a month since I bought my Virus TI! To celebrate the occasion, and the fact that I got it working without issues (still can't believe it LOL), I put together my first VirusTI-enabled project.

I present to you a nice Club/Electro-House Remix of the pop hit Flo Rida - "Whistle". Almost all the sounds are from the TI. My artist name is "Inflator". This is a nice one to blast when you're getting ready to go to the club, with a nice electro bass!

    Here's the YouTube video:

    On SoundCloud:

Sorry about the mastering, the only acapella I could find wasn't the best quality.

Here's hoping to a great future with the TI! Enjoy and feel free to subscribe for upcoming productions ;)

    Here's some more detail:

    1) For the Virus FX channels (i.e. the FX channels where the Virus sounds are sent - you can have a maximum of 3, and each one must point to some FX channel, even if it's blank), make sure the following setting is "None":

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://i48.tinypic.com/2pt6r8x.png]

    2) But on the MASTER and all other (your own) FX channels, set the value of 98.68 ms for the Lower-Arrow section in the FX delay compensation window below, in MS (milliseconds):

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://i45.tinypic.com/idrl7b.png]

This should do it. What I recommend: Start off with the Tutorial FL project, and build on top of it. Delete the stuff you don't need, and add your own samples and start from there. These settings are built into the FLP Virus Tutorial and that one is guaranteed to work. Let me know any issues.

(The main idea here is that everything else starts a little early to be in line with the Virus - the value of 98.68 ms is standard.)

    WasteMind,

First of all open the Tutorial FL project and you'll see how it's done.

You need to set the Lower Arrow on each FX channel to 98.68 ms (click each FX channel, look at the bottom where you have 2 arrows; select the lower one, then right-click, choose MS milliseconds , then set the value to 98.68 ).

Let me know if this works for you, if not I can post screenshots

It's actually pretty easy, I got rid of all my delays, it's perfect now - I just looked at how they did it in the Tutorial.

My piano drawing contains only short notes, but sometimes a note is held indefinitely, until I press Stop. Is this a bug?

It's happening a lot when I'm using commercial soundbanks. The note will be held until I force it to stop even though it shouldn't be playing anymore. Other times, multiple notes are held indefinitely, and they pile on top of each other.

If you're interested I can tell you exactly which patches it's happening on... The only way to get rid of this glitch is to re-drag the patch into the part, then it starts observing the note length correctly. But then, I lose all my tweaks that I made on that patch.

    Thanks
