On the contrary. macOS 10.14 (Mojave) works very well, I’ve used that for 4 years without problems.

Most of the time, the problem is with the USB bus/controller. Be sure the Virus is the only device connected to your computer via (USB) or connect the Virus to a professional grade MTT hub (USB 2 or USB 3 - an Elektron Overhub for example). Make sure you don’t connect anything else to the same USB bus/controller. You can check what is connected on each USB bus in the macOS system information. Sometimes there are internal devices connected, like the card reader or camera or trackpad on macbooks. Avoid those buses.

All my problems vanished after setting up two quite expensive Exsys USB 3 MTT hubs and connecting all my USB devices with quality cables only to those hubs. Avoid cheap USB cables and devices like the plague.

I can 100% understand what you mean. I would never seriously use a sound like that in a track. I only chose these exaggerated settings because then you can hear the noise better. But it definitely also occurs in Unison Twin and the normal waveforms (Saw/Sine). Regardless of the resonance values or the level, I had already reduced it and the noise was there unchanged. The only thing that would be interesting to me is whether this noise also occurs on your devices when you use my preset or just with 2x unison.

I just want to rule out the possibility that my device isn't defective because I've never noticed it before.

Edit: I made a new sample...It´s only Saw unison, filter and a bit env amount and amp rel ca. 40-50...It´s really crazy and I checked the same settings with my Virus C. There isn´t any noise

Sorry for the long delay.

I can hear it now in the sample. However, without the preset it's hard to tell your settings. It sounds as if there's a good deal of filter resonance going on in that sound.

Maybe your banks are memory protected? Don't know the Virus B but on the Virus TI there's an option in the menus under CONFIG > SYSTEM > Mem Protect.

colom2000 you set up 2 Hypersaw oscillators set to 9 voices each (= 18 virtual oscillators), and Unison 8, which results in 144 virtual saw oscillators, quite detuned. That produces a lot of clashing overtones which are perceived as noise. Then these noisy 144 saw waves run into two (virtual analogue) filters in series with a the resonance set to about a quarter. You are probably already overloading the filters at the input, which results in overdrive or distortion around the resonance frequency. The resonance slides through a large part of the spectrum, so it crosses many overtones. The whole set up is also very loud, and may produce digital clipping during calculation of the sound.

BTW, it's total overkill to use UNISON 8 with two Hypersaw OSC at density 9. You could also use UNISON twin for the stereo effect, and then add a noise oscillator to add the grainyness, which is much easier on the DSPs, is less prone to digital clipping and allows more voices.

Then your only option is to use macOS 10.14.6 with a matching version of Logic. I think.

To be fair, they started ten years later. And still struggled to keep up with macOS compatibility.

There’s the AURA editor plugin, which some get to work. But it’s difficult and cumbersome to set up. If you already struggled with the original TI software, which is plug and play, you’ll probably not want to cope with that. Unfortunately.

If you have the time, patience, technical knowledge and a good deal of luck to get it to work. For the average musician it’s simply too difficult to set up, unfortunately.

The VCC should be able to read Virus bank files written by the Virus Control plugin. The AURA Editor should write files in the same format. You can test by trying to read them with the Virus Control plugin. BTW your own libraries should be located in your home directory under Documents not in the system Library path.

If it doesn’t work, contact AURA plugins.

I’d start with a square wave on both OSC and OSC sync. OSC at least one octave apart and some detune. Or some FM. Or a detuned Hypersaw. Add unison or chorus. A good deal of distortion (e.g. carefully tuned sine fold) for added scream. A touch of delay and reverb to add bigness. Use LFOs or Envelopes to modulate pitch and detune.

This is where all the fun starts on the Virus.

Virus Control Center "Restore Factory Settings" loads wrong ROM banks on TI2 Desktop and Polar

I'm trying to fully restore a Virus Ti2 Desktop to factory settings, including the ROM banks. According to the manual addendum, the Virus Control Center (5.1.3.0) offers the option "Restore Factory Settings" under the menu "Advanced" for that purpose. Then VCC recognizes the hardware as Ti2 Desktop and starts the process "Restoring Factory Settings" just fine.

However, when it finished, the ROM banks contained not the sound sets for the Ti2 but for the Ti (Version 1). So it seems that VCC…

So, the problem is not SPDIF but how to use the inputs in general.

Did you start with one of the ROM presets that is named „Input“?

Ok, I suggest you set up a MIDI event monitor and check what the KK actually sends out abd what the Virus receives in the input.

Pretty sure there’s some stray control messages.

Cubase or some other controller sending MIDI Volume (Controller 7) messages?

Current version is 5.1.7.0. There is no way to load the firmware without the Virus Control Center, which is not available for macOS newer than 10.14.

The panic function only helps with hanging notes (which can happen when switching presets while playing) but not when a DSP crashed. It seems that support hasn’t fully understood the problem.

Did you point them to this thread?

USB 3 and USB 2 are using physically separated wires and connections which are combined on the USB 3 connectors and cables. Therefore the Virus would connect to the USB 2 connector inside the USB 3 socket (check out Wikipedia about the technical details), and it should make no difference to connecting to a USB 2 socket.

However, the most critical part are the hubs. And there are huge differences in operation and performance (look up USB MTT). A USB 3 hub (which also contains a USB 2 hub) might use inferior components for the USB 2 to achieve lower production cost.

Inferior USB 2 components might have an impact on Virus TI compatibility.
