and yet the virus update put a vst3 file into cubase but no side chain. could you please clear this up for me please

cubase doesn't support every aspect of steinberg's VST3 standard. for instance, cubase does not support instruments to have audio inputs (which you need for side chaining). it has nothing to do with virus control in the first place.

That Steinberg SDK allows developers to test that their VSTs can use audio inputs.
It doesn't mean that a particular DAW supports it! As Marc has written, Cubase apparently does not support audio inputs to VST instruments.
Not all VSTs are instruments, some are effects and those of course need audio inputs.
