I have two Virus Classic desktop synths. Both are running OS 4.9. One was in storage for two years. I powered it up yesterday, and there was no audio output. The demo song runs but cannot be heard. Otherwise the settings are the same as the working Virus in my studio. What could be the cause of this problem, no audio output?
No audio output from Virus Classic

are your RAM banks still holding presets?

Good question. The answer is no. The A and B RAM Banks are now the same as C and D ROM. What does that indicate?
-
it might indicate that the battery is empty (which can lead to what you've discovered). you need to get in touch with support.

Thanks, marc. I emailed support. I hope that the fix will be easy and not too expensive.

if it's the battery you probably can fix it yourself.

Yes, I think that I could. However, the Access Manual says that there are no user-serviceable parts. Is the battery soldered to the circuit board?
Also, I understand that RAM banks A and B are lost. But why woudn't banks C and D produce sound?
I emailed Access Customer Support, but didn't get a confirmation yet.

Hi,
I received a reply from Customer Support. They said to change the battery myself. But the fact that banks A and B are not empty, but rather hold copies of banks C and D is not consistent with an empty battery. I'll change the battery and post the results.

The battery is not soldered on, but there is a metal foot that holds the battery in place. Please make sure to be very careful that you do not break the foot off, otherwise, your battery will be loose and not have a connection. This is a pretty common repair we see come in, so just be gentle.

Just to close this out. My gut feeling is that the circuit board failed, not the battery, since Banks A and B are not completely empty. The module was in storage, and may have experienced temperature stress, causing a component or solder joint to fail. So I decided not to break the warranty seal and to let the pros look under the hood. typhoon
