Installs fine on the PC (win XP sp3) and at the point where is asks me to switch on the TI to update it it immediately (and always - 4 times so far with redownloads and reboots in between) rolls back the install stating that there was an error.

OS 5 will not install onto the virus itself

Have you tried to switch the TI on before you start the installer?
