Does the Virus work best with VST2 or 3?

Vst 2 or Vst 3?

If you're going to use your host's freeze function, go with 3. I've been going with 3 in Cubase, and haven't noticed a difference in its general use (sadly! Still get the timing problems.).

depends on the host but 3 is the better choice in general.

Why is VST3 better?

Probably because it's 1 higher than 2...
On a serious note it's the host. The way the daw handles in 3 is better than 2. Not sure there'd be any audio quality differences.

in case of the virus, if you automate a VST2 plug-in you need to enable every parameter you're planning to automate. you don't have to do this with VST3. there are many other tiny things like that. but the most important thing is: VST2 is discontinued. there are chances that you will not be able to use a VST2 plug-in in a future version of cubase.

best thing to do for future proofing is retain full installs of cubase. i have version 6 and 7 still on the pc alongside 7.5.20 so if anything nasty changes, you can run a whole previous version which should see things all compliant etc

that's certainly a good strategy. but say you PC breaks down in the future, you build a new one and you need to run windows XYZ on that which is incompatible with cubase 6 and 7 --> you enter trouble land. that's why it is advisable to use VST3 versions for new projects.
