I too would like an update on this issue. The problems have clearly existed for months and neither Apogee nor Access are providing real answers. We have paid a lot of money for these devices, when can we expect them to play nicely together as expected? The Apogee apps all segfault when Virus software is installed. That shouldn't be hard to handle at all.

OSX 10.6.8 here, with Logic 9.1.8.

I personally don't care about OSX 10.5 support. I had upgraded my machine to Lion quite some time ago, but Logic 9 has some serious performance issues on 10.7/10.8 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4142085?tstart=0 is just one example). I wound up downgrading my system to 10.6.8, which is rock solid. In the course of the frustration that led to downgrading, I found many, many people that are sticking with 10.6.8 for a while.

As such, my vote would be that to drop 10.5 support is probably not an issue for many people, although dropping 10.6 might be a bit premature.

I just want to stress that the Virus sends its return audio over USB on (up to) 3 stereo pairs. Within the Virus part routing is configurable.

(With the caveat that I work in Logic, so specific details will be a bit different for you.)

As flabberbob said, you can split the audio across up to 3 stereo pairs over USB, or 3 analog stereo pairs. When I first got the Virus, I too was frustrated at the seeming limitation. But once you get it integrated into your workflow, I think you'll see that it really is a non-issue.

My current default is to round all the Virus audio over USB channels 1+2, and I also have analog cables from the Virus analog output 1 pairs to my sound card. When I'm working on a part, I'll compose on a track specifically assigned to that MIDI channel, and I'll listen via the USB audio connection. Then once I'm done, I use direct output feature on the Virus (the 'D' in the Virus plugin - check your manual) and I manually bounce that track to audio, which I record to a new audio track. Then I do all my audio processing on that audio track.

Once I've bounced it to audio, I mute the MIDI clips and hide the MIDI channel, so it's not in the way. Rarely do I find I need to go back and re-do things, but if I do, it's easy to just delete the rendered audio sections, make my changes, re-bounce. Since all the processing is done on the audio channels, not the Virus MIDI channels, it only affects those specific sounds.

There are plenty of different workflows, but this is what I've found works for me and is efficient. It also allows me to make probably overly-complex sounds, since I can dedicate the entire Virus CPU to one channel at a time.

This has been discussed ad nauseam on the forums and elsewhere, so I'm sure you can find more specific info with some searching. Welcome to Viral heaven!

I submitted an e-mail to Access via the contact/support channels earlier this year regarding RSS feed links being broken, and was told it would be looked into. I even reported exactly why the links in the RSS feeds don't work, and what needed to be done to fix it. I got a response along the lines of "we'll look into it" but never heard anything back. I'm posting here in the hopes that somebody from Access will take notice and make this *very* simple fix, as the forum RSS feeds are currently useless.

As it stands, the RSS feeds link to what I assume is an old domain (http://www.access-music.de). However, this domain currently is setup to 302 redirect ALL requests for this domain to just http://virus.info. There is no regex or anything that attempts to remap URLs to the new domain, even though the actual path of the URLs hasn't changed!

For example, a link from the feed today to a thread on OS 5.0.1 links to

    Code
    http://www.access-music.de/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=4147

    - this URL doesn't exist, and instead the user is sent to the base http://virus.info page. However just changing http://www.access-music.de to virus.info and leaving everything else the same works just fine. So http://virus.info/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=4147 goes where it's supposed to.

This is very easily fixed in one (or both) of two ways.

    • Adjust the settings in the forum software so that it knows it lives at virus.info and not at http://www.access-music.de. That way all future links will be correct.
    • Make a small config addition to the web server so that any requests to http://www.access-music.de are automatically redirected to the same URL, but on virus.info.

Either of these will fix the problem. This will also fix the issue tomf posted regarding e-mail links not working (http://virus.info/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=3767).

The best approach would be to do both of them. If the domain http://www.access-music.de isn't going to be referenced anymore, then the forum shouldn't know about it. And option 2 not only solves the broken forum e-mail/RSS links issue, it also would fix the problem of any old links to the Access site not working.

As it stands, there is no point in having the RSS feeds as an option, because they don't even work. This is a simple fix that literally will take no more than five minutes, please Access!

oops thats what i meant FB. my mistake :X. and i read somewhere on a forum that once you do what you mentioned above, you can only input 3 plug-ins from the logic side of the mix. I'm trying to look for the forum where i read it but no avail!. i'll keep looking.

If you mean you can only choose three plugins on an audio channel strip in Logic, then no, that's not true - you can use as many as your CPU will allow you to use. Logic places no limitation on the number of plugins you can use on a single channel strip (well, I'm sure there's some kind of very high internal limitation.. but in practical terms, there are no limits).

Two things I would suggest reading:

    • In the 'Tutorials' directory under /Applications/Access Music/Virus TI/ you will find a directory named 'Apple Logic' and inside there, a PDF. Read over that, especially paying close attention to the 'Recording and playback' and 'Mixing and Routing' sections.
    • This thread and the linked videos are also helpful in understanding how routing works when using the Virus within Logic: http://www.logicprohelp.com/fo…topic.php?p=367263#367263

In short, if you only want to apply plugins to a specific timbre within Logic, you need to route that audio to use a separate output from the general Virus output. I had started doing that, but what I've settled on as my process at this point is to get things just as I like them within the Virus, pre-plugins. Then I bounce the track to audio, mute the original MIDI part (but leave it in place so I can re-use it later if I want), and apply my plugins on the audio channel. Frees up processing power on the Virus, and allows much easier control and automation of plugins. Plus working with rendered audio is really easy within Logic, and more reliable then trying to depend on hardware to play a bunch of parts at once. Then if I want to make changes to a previously bounced segment, I just unmute it and re-bounce.

Don't know if that'll be the best workflow for you, but it's the one I've settled on so far (in my thus far very short time living with the Virus!)

Hi all! I've been lurking here for quite some time, and after years of viral lust, I've finally been able to take the plunge and pick up a Virus TI2 Desktop! :D I've read a lot of the threads on here already, read a lot in other places, and watched Ben Crosland's awesome bootcamp videos. And I feel even on my first day that programming the Virus is a dream! It's incredibly intuitive, and I've gotten sounds out of it that I had been trying to achieve with soft synths and plugins and still wasn't able to quite get. This is the first hardware synth I have, other than a Korg MS-2000 - which is awesome, but has very limited polyphony and isn't anywhere near as flexible as the Virus. So I'm a kid on Christmas again.

Not to mention, it's INSANE how deep this thing is! I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of what it's capable of, and I'm really psyched to just spend many hours experimenting and twiddling!
