Noise on audio recorded by USB

  • Hi all
I've been battling with a bit of white noise on one of my tracks recently, its noticable at the beginning where all the synths are quiet (especially noticable when it's been mastered)
Having done some experimentation I've found the noise is on the recordings of the virus channels - about 4 tracks come in at once at the start and each one has a small amount of noise on it. This adds up.
I'm recording my virus (polar 1) channels over USB into Ableton Live on an Intel Mac.. as far as I know this is digital information and there shouldnt be any noise being introduced.. is it possible my setup has problems or do some of the patches just have inherent noise in them?
    Regards
    Dan

  • white noise.. the noise doesnt start until the patch starts playing - ie if I record the virus being silent there is no noise it comes with the first note.
can you explain what you mean by checking my input boost amount?

  • input boost is on your virus input configuration
but you didn't mention you were recordig your sound patches by virus analog input !!!

did you try to hear your virus channel without any eq and comp and master buss plugins?

  • I've been recording using USB outputs not 1/4 inch Jack.. could this be the source of the problem?

no, sorry i was just making a joke. you won't get any type of noise using USB unless you create the noise with the Virus. as pointed out, using a patch which uses the analogue inputs would be a possibility. in the digital domain, noise is not added unless noise is calculated or something goes wrong. for instance, if you have an USB transmission problem, this won't result in added (white) noise but artifacts which can sound like distortion.

one parameter you should check is CONFIG > Input Thru - that should be zero which means off.
