Origins of oscillators with F-shift and F-spread

  • I tried looking up some history in regards to the origins of oscillators with F-shift and F-spread like the graintable and formant oscillators of the Virus and couldn't find anything. Does anyone know what the first synth that featured this was? Was it the Virus?

  • The Grain Table and Formant Table oscillators introduced by firmware update 2.0 are unique to the Virus TI, AFAIK. Other synthesizer (plugins) offer similar granular synthesis types but none are identical.

  • Massive by Native Instruments offers an even more powerful Bend and Formant mode for its many wavetables. It was released as standalone application and plugin 2006.

The Virus TI OS 2.0 which introduced the Grain and Formant oscillators was released in spring 2007. It’s hard to tell how much of an influence NI Massive had on this development, since new digital synthesis types were discovered and implemented by software manufacturers back then. The main problem was that PC CPUs were not powerful enough to handle these instruments, and a DSP based hardware like the Virus had a clear advantage.

  • I haven’t come across anything that would explain technical details if these oscillators.

The most elaborate description is still found in the Manual Addendum in the chapter What’s new in version 2.0?

  • Can you post a link for that, please?:)

It's not very detailed at all. At least not the kind of in depth explanation that I wish I could find.

And obviously some people out there understand it, I mean Kemper engineered it, and Adam Szabo has implemented them into Viper, although I've never used it personally.
