Virus TI2 - Can you Limit Polyphony Per Track?

  • I am searching for a way to limit the polyphony per track in the Virus TI2. I would love the ability to limit a track to only 4 notes polyphony to help replicate some vintage synths. Is this possible as it currently stands? If not, are there known workarounds to accomplish this?

  • A sound can only be switched between polyphonic and different types of monophonic. The polyphony cannot be limited to a defined number of voices.

A workaround could be to use 4 parts with the same monophonic sound. But that would only work when playing different notes on different MIDI channels, which is most probably not achievable when playing live.

This is what I was messing with actually, round robin the same patch on multiple channels via the MidiHub. Not the best answer, but it is a. workable solution for the times it is something I really want.

  • The Virus understands the number of voices to be 100.
They are reduced during Unison Mode (Common Menu) which can therefore divide this number of voices by 8. In addition, Analog 1-4 pole (Menu Filter): reduces polyphony by 50% Also, WavePWM or Grain / Formant Complex ( Menu Osc1/2 Menu): reduces polyphony by 50%.
    SOLUTION =
Prepare a PATCH 00 to "eat" voices using Unison on 8 voices + Analog 1-4 pole (Menu Filter) + WavePWM or Grain / Formant Complex (Menu Osc1/2 Menu)
In MULTI mode, in Track 1, put your VINTAGE PATCH
Then, put this PATCH 00, in Track 2, in Track 3, in Track 4, etc… stuck on the same channel each time. Accumulate this "PATCH 00" several times until you manage to eat 96 Voices. EDIT : track 2 to 3 and more... = Volume on "0" and "Part enable" = ON
NOTE: Not tested, this is just an idea…

  • Thanks! I didn’t remember that the manual stated actual numbers, as Access Music tends to be rather vague about implementation details of the sound engine.

What has to be considered is that the Virus does not have real voices. As a digital synth, it has the capacity to do a certain amount and complexity of calculations within a given timeframe.

This can roughly be expressed as being able to do a certain number of voices with a certain type of oscillator. However, effects for example are not calculated per voice and the sound engine also uses some more or less graceful degradation by doing less accurate calculations before dropping voices.

Therefore, it is almost impossible to predict the number of used voices, as there’s no such thing in reality. And it’s especially not possible to provoke voice stealing without compromising sound quality and timing accuracy.
